Tributes have been paid to former Devon councillor and Second World War pilot John Dunkley, who died aged 86.
He served for many years on East Devon District Council and Sidmouth Town Council.
He was town council chairman from 1990 to 1992. Mr Dunkley was on the district council for seven years until 1991 and was chairman of the old tourism committee.
He fought with the RAF against the Japanese in Burma in 1941. After the war he joined BOAC, later to become British Airways, as a long-haul captain, on flights worldwide.
He was seconded to West Africa for three years — retiring in 1973 following 23 years' service.
He later gained a degree in geography and maths and taught at Exeter College, Colyton Grammar School, Sidmouth College and The King's School at Ottery St Mary.
As a long-time member of the Astronomical Society he helped secure the future of Sidmouth's Norman Lockyer Observatory. Mr Dunkley was also a member of Sidmouth Amateur Dramatic Society.
